Understanding NAATI Certified Translation in detail
NAATI (National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters) is Australia's national standards body for translators and interpreters, established in 1977. It is the only authority recognised by the Australian government to certify translation professionals. Any non-English document submitted to the Department of Home Affairs, Australian Embassies, Australian universities, Centrelink/Medicare/ATO, or Australian courts must be translated by a NAATI-certified practitioner.
NAATI offers several certification tiers: Recognised Practising Translator (for languages without a test pathway), Certified Translator (CT), Certified Advanced Translator (CAT), and Certified Conference Interpreter. For Thai-English visa documents, DHA accepts Certified Translator and above. The NAATI Test pass rate sits at just 12–15% of all candidates, so qualified practitioners are scarce.
The current NAATI stamp (in use since January 2018) follows a strict format: a deep blue rectangle containing a QR code that links directly to NAATI's online verification page. It also displays a 7-digit Practitioner ID, full translator name, language direction (e.g. Thai > English), certification level, and expiry date. Receiving authorities can scan and verify in 5 seconds, defeating any forged-stamp attempts.

Thai National ID Card (Smart Card)
The current Thai Smart Card (2011–present) has 14 fields a NAATI Translator must render in full: 13-digit national identity number, Thai/English name, registered address, date of birth, religion, blood type, issue date, expiry, issuing authority, signature, and biometric notes. The translation displays both faces of the card on a single A4 page with a translator's note explaining the seal of the Department of Provincial Administration.
Birth Certificate (Thor.Ror.1)
Thai birth certificates exist in three major eras: pre-1997 (yellow typewritten paper), 1997–2005 (early computerised forms), and 2005–present (the standardised national format). NAATI Translators must render all 18 fields including parents' names, parents' nationality and occupation, address at birth, registration number, place of birth (hospital or home), the registrar's details, and the issuing district seal.
Name Change Certificate (Chor.3 / Chor.5)
Two forms exist: Chor.3 for given-name changes and Chor.5 for surname changes. Both are issued by the district office where the applicant is registered. The translation must include the original name, new name, national ID number, approval date, and reason for the change (where stated). For Partner Visa 820/309 lodgements, DHA cross-checks every name across every document — so any historical name change must be presented with a translated Chor.3 or Chor.5.
Marriage Certificate (Khor.Ror.3)
Khor.Ror.2 is the registry copy held by the district; Khor.Ror.3 is the certificate issued to the couple. DHA requires Khor.Ror.3 with NAATI translation for Partner visas. The translation must cover all 11 fields: both spouses' names, dates of birth, nationalities, occupations, addresses, both sets of parents' names, two witnesses, registration date, and the district seal.
Household Registration (Thor.Ror.14)
Thailand issues two house-registration formats: blue book (Thai citizens) and yellow book (foreign residents). NAATI Translators must render every page where the visa applicant is listed, plus head-of-household details, full resident roster, move-in/out dates, the 11-digit household code, and the issuing district seal. For Partner Visas, matching addresses across both spouses' Thor.Ror.14 is a key piece of evidence for a genuine de facto relationship.
