What "Thai Government Document Translation" Actually Covers
The phrase "government document" sounds narrow but in practice covers the most important paperwork in any Thai citizen's life and any foreigner's interaction with Thailand. NYC Legal's translation desk routinely processes documents from all twenty Thai ministries, the Royal Thai Police, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Department of Consular Affairs, the Court of Justice of Thailand, the Royal Household Bureau, the Department of Provincial Administration, the Department of Lands, the Revenue Department, the Department of Business Development, the Office of the National Education Commission, the Office of the Civil Service Commission, all 156 public hospitals under the Ministry of Public Health, all 80+ public universities, the Royal Thai Army/Navy/Air Force, and the Department of Local Administration covering all 928 District Offices.
By document category the breakdown is roughly: civil registry 38% (ID cards, household registrations, birth/marriage/divorce/death certificates, name changes), education 22% (transcripts, degrees, professional licences, school certificates), business and tax 14% (company affidavits, VAT registration, tax notices, audited financial statements), legal and court 11% (court rulings, divorce decrees, wills, powers of attorney, restraining orders), medical and health 7% (medical reports, vaccination records, AHPRA registrations), military 4% (service exemption, discharge), and miscellaneous 4% (driver's licences, vehicle registration, land titles, monk ordination certificates).
Choosing the Right Certification Format
Different destination countries require different certification formats. Sending the wrong format causes immediate rejection and 4-12 week resubmission delay. The decision tree is simple once you know it:
Australia, New Zealand: NAATI Certified Translation. The translator must hold full NAATI certification (CCT level) under the post-2018 framework with a unique 7-digit practitioner number. Recognised-only translations are no longer accepted by Home Affairs. Australian state BDM registries, AHPRA, Centrelink, ATO, Family Court and Federal Court all accept NAATI exclusively.
United Kingdom: Translation by a "qualified translator" on company letterhead with translator's signed declaration of accuracy, full contact details and credentials. The Institute of Translation and Interpreting (ITI) and Chartered Institute of Linguists (CIOL) are the gold-standard credentials but a NAATI translator working through NYC Legal's letterhead-and-declaration format also satisfies the UK Home Office requirement.
United States: "Certified translation" with translator's certification statement. USCIS, US Department of State, US courts and US universities accept the NAATI translation provided it carries the required certification statement. For court filings we attach an additional notarised affidavit of translator competency.
Canada: Translation by a "certified translator" — Canadian provincial certification (ATIO Ontario, OTTIAQ Quebec, STIBC BC, ATIA Alberta) is preferred but IRCC also accepts foreign certified translation accompanied by a translator affidavit. NYC Legal provides the IRCC-compliant affidavit format.
Germany, Austria, Switzerland (German-speaking): Sworn translator (Vereidigter Übersetzer / Beeidigter Übersetzer / Allgemein beeidigter Übersetzer) only. Translations from non-sworn translators are categorically rejected by German Standesamt offices, the Auswärtiges Amt, German universities and the BAMF. NYC Legal works with sworn translators registered in Berlin, Munich, Frankfurt and Hamburg.
France: Traducteur Assermenté (sworn translator registered with a French Court of Appeal) only. Required by all French embassies, mairies, prefectures and OFII offices.
Spain, Italy, Portugal: Traductor Jurado / Traduttore Giurato / Tradutor Ajuramentado — sworn translator registered in the destination country.
Netherlands, Belgium: Beëdigd vertaler / traducteur juré — sworn translator registered with destination courts.
Japan, South Korea, China, Vietnam: Translation by translator on company letterhead + Thai MFA legalisation + destination embassy authentication. Embassy authentication is the bottleneck — typically 5-7 working days at Tokyo, Seoul and Beijing Embassies in Bangkok.
Apostille — The 14 September 2025 Game-Changer
Until 13 September 2025, Thai government documents destined for foreign use had to undergo a chain of legalisations: source-agency → Thai MFA → destination-country embassy in Bangkok. This chain typically added 7-14 working days and ask our team for current rates (phone / LINE / email) per document. From 14 September 2025 — the date Thailand's accession to the Hague Apostille Convention came into force — Thai documents bound for any of the 125 Hague member countries (including Australia, NZ, UK, USA, Canada, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Netherlands, Japan and South Korea) require only a single Apostille from the Thai MFA. The Apostille is recognised directly by the destination country with no further authentication. This single change typically saves 5-10 days and ask our team for current rates (phone / LINE / email) per document.
NYC Legal handles both routes seamlessly: Apostille for Hague-bound documents (now the default), traditional chain legalisation for non-Hague destinations.
